MU Field Hockey Opens Season with Thrilling 3-2 OT Win

The Misericordia University field hockey team opened the 2014 season with a 3-2 overtime victory over Gwynedd-Mercy on Friday afternoon at McGeehan Field.The Cougars captured an early 1-0 lead when Emily Hegner deflected a Lindsay Hischak shot into the back corner of the cage at the 25:45 mark of the first half.The Griffins struck back when Brianna O'Connel broke loose from the MU defense and sent a shot into the cage to tie the game at 1-1 early into the second half. Melissa Russo finished a pass from Stephanie Bachp to give Gwynedd-Mercy a 2-1 advantage at the Jennifer O'Neill had a huge second half for the Cougars, picking up the game tying goal on a deflection and then the game winner in overtime at the 77:01 mark. Melanie Fry was credited with the assist in O'Neill's game winner. Danika Watto had a defensive save in the first half while Megan Yeager and Samantha Partington had defensive saves in the second half. Angela Pasquini had 11 saves in the cage for the Cougars. With the win the Cougars improve to 1-0 and will host Keystone Friday afternoon at 4:00.
